Official Opening Ceremony of the
Magan Centre of Applied Mycology
3rd October 2025, 09:30 - 15:30
AIRC Building, Cranfield University

Join us for the official launch of the Magan Centre of Applied Mycology (MCAM) – a milestone marking a year of growth, new academic collaborations, and the start of a global effort to reimagine the role of applied mycology in building a sustainable future.
MCAM represents a bold and timely investment in the untapped potential of fungi to support the transition to a greener, more sustainable global economy. Fungi are among the most diverse organisms on Earth, contributing an estimated £42.5 trillion to the global economy in 2022, largely through food and medicine. Historically, mycology has focused on addressing the harmful effects of fungi, such as disease, food loss, and toxins. But the future of applied mycology lies in unlocking the transformative traits of fungi to advance net zero goals, biotechnological innovation, and sustainable development.
Free to attend, and all welcome.

Fungal Foray
4th October 2025, 13:00 - 16:00
Milner Centre for Evolution, University of Bath, Claverton Down, BA2 7AY

13:00 - 15:00 Fungal Foray: Join fungal experts from the University of Bath for a guided fungal foray! We will set off from the Milner Centre and stroll along public footpaths to a nearby woodland. Along the way, you’ll learn how to identify different fungi, explore safe foraging practices, and help record the mushrooms we encounter. Whether you’re a seasoned mycologist, a keen enthusiast, or a complete beginner, all are welcome! Please note: this foray is primarily for recording purposes and to explore the fascinating fungal kingdom. While edible fungi will be discussed, foraging for food is not the main focus of the event.

15:00 - 16:00 Refreshments and Activities: After the foray, we’ll gather at the Milner Centre Social Space for (free) drinks and snacks. Together, we’ll look at the diversity of fungi we discovered and take part in some fun fungal-themed activities (details to be confirmed). You’re very welcome to join for as much or as little of the day’s events as you like!
