Photography competition
To celebrate our fungal world, we invite you to capture your favourite fungus on camera!
Fungi play vitally important roles in the natural environment and in our lives. Fungi are with us throughout history in folklore and mythology, playing important roles in ecosystems, and are used in biotechnology to benefit modern society. Everyone is invited to take part, and snap a picture of their favourite fungus!
This competition is free to enter and open to all!
Categories
There are four categories for entry:

Up to 11 years of age

12 to 17 years of age
-
18 years of age and over - Non-professional
-
18 years of age and over - Professional
For the purposes of this competition, a 'Professional' photographer is classified as someone who earns money from photography whether full time or part time.

Rules of entry

The 2026 UK Fungus Day Photography Competition is free to enter.

Only entries submitted by 20th October 2026 17:00 BST will be accepted.

All members of the public are welcome to enter.
Entries will be judged according to the rules and the requirements below:

Entries must be digital photographs

Images must have been taken by the named entrant
-
Maximum of three entries per entrant

Photographs should be 'new', ideally taken within the last 12 months, and not have been entered previously

Entries must be submitted via the online competition entry form.
The following details are required in the entry form:

Entrant's name and an email address (parent or guardian email address, if preferred, for under 18s)

A title for the photo
-
A summary of where the fungus was found (e.g. woods, beach, grassland, city street) and when the photo was taken (month, year)
Judging
The competition will be judged after the closing date of 20 October 2026. There will be one Winner and two Runners-Up per category. Winners and Runners-Up will be contacted by email and announced on this website and on our social media channels. The decision of the judges is final.
Use of images
Photos submitted by Winners and Runners-up will be displayed on the UK Fungus Day and British Mycological Society websites, included in British Mycological Society newsletters and social media channels, and may be used for future promotion of the competition.
By entering this competition, you are agreeing to the use of your image by the British Mycological Society as described above.
Entrants will be asked if they give permission for their image to be stored in the ‘BMS Image Library’ for use by the British Mycological Society and its affiliated fungus groups in perpetuity; photos will be credited to the photographer and will not be digitally altered, except for resizing or cropping where necessary to fit the required format. Entrants are not required to give their permission for this and can participate in the competition regardless.
